Red Wine 750 ml: Varvaglione Papale Gold, Primitivo di Manduria 2019 – Puglia Italy
A rich nose of black plum, blackberry and tilled earth mixes with an orange-spice accent in this wine. The medium-bodied palate is driven by juicy plum and dark berry, pushed along by lifted acidity and a slight saline note. The tannins are soft and mellow but supportive, playing well alongside the rich fruit and warm spice tones.
This is the top-shelf red from Varvaglione Vigne & Vini. The 2016 Primitivo di Manduria Papale Linea Oro is richly saturated and thick with a long trail of dark fruit aromas that run the spectrum from black cherry and cassis to candied plum or prune. All that fruit is infused with spice, smoke and tar. This wine is both generous and intense, perfect for the type of rich veal involtini they call bombette in Puglia. Drink date: 2019-2023.Varvaglione Vigne & Vini has recently shortened its name to Varvaglione. Score – 90. (Monica Larner, robertparker.com, March 5, 2020)
